Cardiac fitness before sailing: what to assess to work at sea
Back to blog

At sea, specialist help can be days away. That is why your heart needs to be in order before casting off. See what a seafarer fitness check-up assesses.

Why assess your heart before sailing?

Onboard, access to a hospital can take hours or days. A cardiac event in the middle of the ocean is a medical emergency that is difficult to manage. Ensuring the heart is fit before departure protects both the crew member and the entire operation.

What the fitness check-up includes

The evaluation combines clinical history, blood pressure measurement, electrocardiogram, and — when indicated — tests such as echocardiogram and stress test. Risk factors — cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, and family history — are reviewed to estimate individual cardiovascular risk.

Warning signs that cannot wait for the next port

Chest pain or tightness, shortness of breath during normal activity, fainting, and persistent palpitations warrant immediate evaluation before sailing. Identifying and treating these signs onshore prevents them from becoming a medical emergency at sea.
