Palpitations are common and do not always indicate a problem. But some signs warrant investigation. Learn to tell the difference between normal and what needs attention.

What are palpitations?

It is the sensation of feeling your own heart beating — fast, hard, or irregularly. This can happen with anxiety, caffeine, exercise, or fever without representing disease.

When to investigate

Palpitations associated with shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, or fainting warrant evaluation. Frequent episodes or a clearly irregular heartbeat should also be investigated.

How is the evaluation done?

The investigation of arrhythmias starts at the consultation and may include an electrocardiogram and Holter (24-hour monitoring). Management is always individualized — from simple observation to specific treatment.
