LDL, HDL, triglycerides… what do these numbers really mean for your heart and what to do when they get out of control.
Not all cholesterol is the villain
LDL is the cholesterol that, in excess, deposits in the arteries and promotes blockage. HDL, on the other hand, helps remove the excess. The goal of treatment is to keep LDL low and HDL adequate.
Why this matters
Dyslipidemia — an alteration in blood fat levels — is one of the main risk factors for heart attack and stroke, precisely because it contributes to the formation of plaque in the arteries.
The path to control
Balanced diet, physical activity, and in many cases medication. Treatment is individualized: each patient has a different cholesterol target, defined based on their overall cardiovascular risk.
